QUAPAW QUARTER URBAN “WALK THROUGH HISTORY”

This urban “trail” demonstrates how we can link the soul of historic communities to the heart of modern cities.

Arkansas Historic Preservation Program historians will take you on a walking tour over accessible city sidewalks on flat terrain to the original location of Little Rock’s nineteenth century industrial and commercial center.

You will wind through the MacArthur Park Historic District to view the changing tastes of residential architecture and learn how successful preservation has allowed for their survival. The tour will end at the Historic Arkansas Museum for a look at how a complex of post-Territorial residential re-creations and a log dogtrot home can teach visitors about their past. This urban “trail” demonstrates how we can link the soul of historic communities to the heart of modern cities.

Interest in Little Rock’s downtown area resurfaced in 1996 with the establishment of the River Market District. Many historic buildings were rehabilitated with new uses and preservation of original features. Despite the twenty-first century infill, enough historic fabric remains to convey the stories of the town’s early nineteenth century beginnings and the twentieth century excitement of “going to town.” The William J. Clinton Presidential Library and Park located at the east end of the district was dedicated in 2004, focusing the attention of the nation on the district.

Workshop Leader Bio:
This workshop will be led by Holly Hope who is a Special Projects Historian for the Arkansas Historic Preservation Program in the Community Outreach area. She has served as Survey Historian, National Register Historian, and Special Projects Historian. Holly conducts historic research on events in Arkansas history and conducts educational programs for the public such as the popular “Walks Through History” program.
