National Recreation Trails 2004 Photo Contest/AlleghenyMD-1008.jpg
The Allegheny Highlands Trail carries the Great Allegheny Passage
National Recreation Trail over the eastern continental divide into
Cumberland, where it joins the C&O Canal Towpath. The sections of the
Allegheny Highlands Trail in Pennsylvania and Maryland are administered
separately, though they cooperate well. This photo is of the Frostburg
Trail Switchbacks. Until the trail is completed from Cumberland to Frostburg,
many riders will choose to ride the Western Maryland Scenic RR. The connection
requires descent of a steep hill; creative use of a hillside has produced
a trail from the Frostburg train station to the main part of the trail
with an accessible gradient (photo by Mary Shaw; all rights reserved).
