A sampling of National Recreation Trails in the news or recently designated. The NRT program showcases the diversity of trails across America, from our cities and suburbs to the deserts, waterways, and high mountains.
Every kind of trail activity is represented in the listing of designated NRTs. Besides hiking and bicycling, the system includes water trails, motorized routes, snow tracks, greenways, and equestrian paths.

Crater Rim Trail — The trail begins at the Kilauea Visitor Center and makes an 11-mile circuit roughly following the crater rim drive of Kilauea. Kilauea is the youngest and southeastern most volcano on the Big Island of Hawaii. The challenging hike takes 5-6 hours and provides a variety of landscapes and climates as well as views of the craters and Mauna (designated 1982).
Halemau'u Trail — The trail covers 10 miles across Haleakala National Park on the Big Island of Hawaii to the Haleakalā Crater which is 2,600 feet deep. The Halemau'u Trail leads into the crater from the summit area and descends 1,400 feet over two miles of switchbacks. The summit of Haleakala volcano itself rises to 10,023 feet in elevation (designated 1982).
