Tread Lightly!

The national nonprofit organization Tread Lightly! sponsors the Tread Trainer program

The Tread Trainer program is designed to train participants in innovative, practical methods of spreading outdoor ethics to the public with a curriculum specifically focused on motorized and mechanized recreation.

Completing a course will qualify the participant to become a Tread Lightly! representative— a "Tread Trainer" or a "Master Trainer." Once a participant is trained, he or she is equipped to train other educators, clubs, employees, visitors, enthusiasts or community members in the Tread Lightly! ethic. The program was created as a mechanism to disseminate the Tread Lightly! message of responsible recreation through volunteerism.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Master Trainers complete a multi-day training course on the Tread Lightly! ethic and are qualified to:

  • Provide Tread Trainer training to a minimum of 25 people within two years.
  • Present on the Tread Lightly! principles to a minimum of 50 people within two years.

Trainers complete an 8-hour training course provided by a current Master Trainer and are qualified to:

  • Provide at least one presentation or multiple promotions of the Tread Lightly! message within two years through recreation events, club meetings, staff training, safety courses, Tread Lightly! Awareness Workshops or other means.

BENEFITS

Trainers receive a 100-page manual, 2 Tread Lightly! PowerPoint presentations on CD, certificate of completion, set of durable plastic Tread Lightly! hangtags, set of guides for responsible recreation, set of quick-tip brochures, set of PSAs, "On the Right Trail" video, an extra discount on all Tread Lightly! products, $25 in free Tread Lightly! educational materials, use of Tread Lightly!Ős mascot costume, table-top display, and education trunk upon request, and updates through a semi-annual newsletter, emails and website.

Trainers also receive improvements in presentation skills, networking opportunities with other agencies/organizations at the course, and firm comprehension of outdoor ethics and ways to minimize impacts when recreating.

The key to a successful workshop is to have participants that are familiar with Tread Lightly!, involved in community outreach or recreational training programs, or are interested in developing a higher awareness and competency on responsible recreation ethics.

PROGRAM SPONSORS: This program is made possible by the generous sponsorship of the Ford Motor Company Fund and the Federal Highway AdministrationŐs Recreational Trails Program.
