to the creation of a national trails infrastructure that meets the
recreation, health, and travel needs of all Americans. In order to
accomplish this mission, American Trails coordinates the National
Trails Symposium every two years, sponsors the National Trails

- The Arizona Trail is a 790 mile non-motorized trail that
begins at the Southern Arizona/Mexico border and ends at the
Northern Arizona/Utah border, linking four national parks
(including Grand Canyon), four national forests, and eleven
wilderness areas. The Arizona Trail Association coordinates the
construction, maintenance, training, user education and promotion
of the trail in cooperation with the land management agency

- The ATV Safety Institute (ASI), a nonprofit division of the
Specialty Vehicle Institute of America (SVIA), was formed in 1988
to imple-ment an expanded national program of all-terrain vehicle
(ATV) safety education and awareness. ASI's primary goal is to

accidents and injuries that may result from improper ATV operation

- Back Country Horsemen of America is a service organization
working to insure that public lands remain open to recreational
stock use. Members teach traditional packing skills and educate
horsemen in Leave No Trace principles of traveling with stock.
They assist public lands agencies in maintenance, improvement, and
construction of trails and other facilities. They advocate
politically in support of adequate funding for trails. BCHA is
currently organized in 16 states. In 2001, members donated
$1,900,000 in time, labor, and use of animals and equipment for
volunteer service, much of that devoted to improving backcountry
trails and trailheads.

- The Florida Center for Environmental Studies (CES) is a state
university system research center established in July 1994 by the
Regents of the State University System of Florida. The Center was
created as a place that would "synthesize and communicate
knowledgeÉ to the community at large." This "knowledge" refers to
the management problems of Florida ecosystems and tropical and
sub-tropical water dominated freshwater and estuarian ecosystems

- The Florida Department of Environmental Protection's Office of
Greenways & Trails (OGT) is working to establish a statewide
system of greenways and trails for recreational and conservation
purposes. The staff of OGT provides planning and technical
assistance to local governments, developers, private landowners
and state and federal agencies. OGT also provides grants for the
development of both motorized and non-motorized recreational trail
projects and administers a $4.5 million land acquisition program
under the Florida Forever Act. In order to educate and inform
Florida residents and visitors about the value of greenways and
trails the office sponsors special events, publishes a quarterly
newsletter, prepares press releases and magazine articles, creates
promotional materials, and distributes information regarding
greenways and trails. In addition, OGT manages the Marjorie Harris
Carr Cross Florida Greenway, a 110-mile long conservation and
recreation corridor spanning Putnam, Marion, Citrus and Levy
counties which includes an extensive network of hiking, biking,

responsible for prioritizing how federal transportation dollars
are allocated toward roads, transit and bicycle and pedestrian
facilities. The Volusia MPO is located in Daytona Beach and the

smaller cities rotate on and off the board. The MPO is currently
working on bike/ped implementation plan that will identify
important bicycle and pedestrian facilities suitable for funding,
including multiuse trails. The plan should be completed in March
