BARTON CREEK WILDERNESS PARK (choose from 2 options below)
Enjoy the wild beauty of the Texas Hill Country without leaving town. Tour this 1,700-acre nature park located only minutes from downtown Austin. A scenic seven and one-half mile trail winds along Barton Creek and provides access for hiking, rock climbing, swimming and mountain biking. The trail is a natural surface pathway that follows uneven terrain and contains some wet or dry creek crossings.
This park provides the setting for several symposium activities. Learn about managing a heavily used urban nature park with multiple uses and conflicts. Trail construction and maintenance will be discussed. Ensuring user safety is an important topic that will be explored.
OPTION A TRAIL RUNNING
Get your adrenaline going and partake in one of the fastest growing trail activities throughout the nation: trail running for pleasure and sport. A local expert will hold a trail running workshop. The run will cover a four-mile stretch of the Barton Creek Greenbelt that will be moderately strenuous. Discussions and demonstrations will cover techniques, equipment, and safety. Participation is open to both the novice and the experienced.
OPTION B IMBA TRAIL CONSTRUCTION
Observe an advanced trail building workshop being conducted along a challenging section of the popular Barton Creek Greenbelt. A new section of trail will be developed in order to demonstrate the latest techniques in trail design and sustainable trail construction. Reclamation of an abandoned section of trail will also be discussed. In order to learn by doing, bring your work boots, gloves, long pants, and some elbow grease. The Subaru/IMBA Trail Care Crew and the Austin Ridge Riders Mountain Bike Club will be on hand to assist with the project. Both will share innovative approaches to trail building.
