American Youth Works project underway

Saturday - October 23
Time: 12:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. • Cost: $25.00

Learn about the inspiring trail-building partnership between young people and the City of Austin. The American Youth Works educational organization is designed to provide "youth at promise" a project-based learning experience. The Austin Parks and Recreation Department contracts with Youth Works to build nature trails.

The result is a growth experience for these youth, as well as, some amazing trail work. This group specializes in utilizing indigenous materials from the parks to build the trails and trail facilities. The result has been some outstanding rockwork, fence building with cedar poles, and even some artistic endeavors.

We will tour the recently completed American Youth Works West Bouldin Creek Trail and the Northwest Balcones Trail. Trails under construction in the Spicewood Valley will be reviewed for construction techniques, including trails through wetland areas. See the folding "rock cart" that was designed by Youth Works to move large boulders. Some of the Youth Works crew will be on hand to tell how this trail work was a life defining experience for them. This story has "win-win" written all over it.
