Waterman Fund announces 2011 alpine stewardship grants

November 28, 2010

The Waterman Fund is pleased to announce that its 2011 alpine stewardship grant application deadline is December 15, 2010. The Fund invites organisations, and local, federal or state agencies to send in project proposals for alpine stewardship, education, research, or trail maintenance through its website or by contacting info@watermanfund.org.

Grant recipients will be nominated in January. Last year, the Fund distributed $14,000 in grants to four northeastern organizations for projects ranging from a summit steward program on Mount Monadnock in Jaffrey, New Hampshire, to an alpine biodiversity research and monitoring project in Quebec and Newfoundland. In previous years, the Fund has supported projects by organisations such as the Adirondack Mountain Club, Antioch University New England, Appalachian Mountain Club, Appalachian Trail Conservancy, Beyond Ktaadn Project, Green Mountain Club, Vermont Center for Ecostudies, and Acadia National Park.

The Fund also is accepting nominations for the Guy Waterman Alpine Steward Award, given each year to a person or organization that has demonstrated a long-term commitment to protecting the physical and spiritual qualities of the northeast’s mountain wilderness.

The deadline for nominating letters is January 1, 2011, and the winner will be honored at the Fund’s annual spring dinner. Past winners include Charlie Jacobi, Pete Fish, Hub Vogelmann, Dick Fortin, Lester Kenway, Ed Ketchledge, and Roger Collins. Please note that if you have nominated someone for the award in past years, their name remains in the running. For further details on how to apply for a grant or how to nominate someone for the award, please see our website or email the Waterman Fund at info@watermanfund.org. Please note that our website is undergoing construction and certain functions may not be available at all times. If you encounter any trouble accessing information for grant guidelines or for making a steward nomination, please email us: info@watermanfund.org.
