US Forest Service Assistant Crew Leader Cabins and Trails Maintenance

Description of Position Duties: 
 
The tour of duty will be April through September with significant time from May to September spent in the field. Office work involves the use of computers to store and analyze data, and to prepare reports. The minimum tour of duty will be 13 two-week pay periods per year with potential to work for more of the year based on project workloads and funding.  Fieldwork will require performing arduous tasks in wet, cold, and mountainous terrain.  Admiralty Island is brown bear habitat and carrying a rifle is required for the position.  A pre-employment drug test will be issued to qualify for this rifle bearing position.  Boating skills in Alaska waters are necessary, but can be developed.
 
This position serves as assistant crew leader and carries out much of the field-based implementation of the program.  Duties include most of those at the GS-5 level which are as follows:  brushing and logging out of trails, performing established maintenance routine on cabins, using hand and power tools for wood construction of cabin furnishings, working with and providing guidance to volunteers and partners.  Cabin maintenance and repairs may include roof replacements, foundation work, window and door replacement, wood/oil stove replacement, cleaning, repairs to skiffs, and firewood cutting.  Incumbents will assist in keeping supplies and equipment stocked through inventory and purchasing, collect and file trail use data, maintain shop area in organized fashion, and maintain tools and equipment to ensure proper functioning while in field.  Projects require familiarity with round log construction and trail construction techniques common to southeast Alaska.
 
In addition, GS-6 level duties involve coordinating logistics for field projects, including transportation and day to day planning to accomplish the work; determine tools, equipment and materials needed for each project; and ensuring tools, equipment, and materials needed for each trip are organized and packed for each trip.  The incumbent will lead in construction and/or repair of trail structures, report work needed and performed at each cabin and on trails through written reports and photographic records; and review the appropriate Job Hazard Analysis with crew.  Supervision of several lower grade employees and volunteers will also be required.
