Johnson Camp Trail Project
Project sponsor: California Department of Parks and Recreation; California Conservation Corps (CCC) Backcountry Trail Crews, State Park Trail Crews, and California Department of Forestry Inmate Crews Award Category: Multiple Use Management and Corridor Sharing 2005 Annual Achievement Award winner: for trail projects funded through the Recreational Trails Program of the Federal Highway Administration Congressional District: Mike Thompson (D-1) Senators: Boxer (D) and Feinstein (D)
The Johnson Camp Trail Improvement Project is located in Humboldt Redwoods State Park, California. The $234,922 project removed two miles of steep, deeply eroded road, available only to hikers, and replaced it with five miles of new trail, on moderate grade, available for hikers and equestrians. The project was accomplished over three years with California Conservation Corps (CCC) Backcountry Trail Crews, State Park Trail Crews, and California Department of Forestry Inmate Crews. Work included trail brushing, trail clearing, trail tread construction, retaining wall construction, and armored stream crossing construction.
For CCC crews, the work also offered class room and field training by State Park trail staff in a variety of trail design and construction subjects. The 55,000 Humboldt Redwoods State Park has the largest stand, 30,000 acres, of old growth redwood trees in the world. The Johnson Camp trail project improved the public's access into this portion of Humboldt Redwoods that undoubtedly will become the most popular trail in the park. Although not possible to meet accessibility standards, it is barrier free.
