Retrofitting Trails for Accessibility

Date & Time: Sunday, May 7, 8:00 am - 11:30 am
Cost: $55
Location: Taylosrsville MetroPark

Better trail design and accessibility work together. The trail accessibility guidelines provide a great opportunity for all trail planners and managers to identify ways to make their trail systems more sustainable and available to more hikers while maintaining the unique natural setting of the trail and reducing maintenance costs in the long term.

This half -day field-oriented workshop will provide you with information on how to assess existing trails and use the Federal Trail Accessibility Guidelines so that you can determine if your trail can meet the guidelines.

Workshop Goals:
• Provide a quick overview of the Federal Trail Accessibility Guidelines
• Learn how to assess trails for accessibility
•Determine what construction needs will be needed to retrofit a trail

What to Bring:
Appropriate field gear for the weather. Expect to be outside during this workshop. We will be operating in the Midwest in May. Expect rain and be pleasantly surprised if it stays dry. We will provide a first aid kit and all of the tools and equipment necessary for the workshop. Participants should plan on bringing safety glasses, work gloves, and sturdy work boots.

Instructor(s): Peter Jensen, Peter S. Jensen and Associates, LLC
Peter Jensen is the principal of Peter S. Jensen and Associates, LLC based out of Great Barrington, Massachusetts. He is a nationally recognized expert in the accessible trails industry. He served on the Regulatory Negotiation Committee of the US Access Board, and has been integral in the development of proposed Accessibility Guidelines for Trails and Outdoor Developed Areas. He is also a skilled instructor in the design, construction, planning and maintenance of natural surface trails that are both sustainable and as inherently accessible as an environment will allow.
