Introduction to Trail Dozer Operation

PTBA Sustainable Trails Workshops can be purchased independently from a Symposium registration package. To attend a PTBA Sustainable Trails Workshop, you must still register through the online registration system.

Workshop Costs:
Due to a generous sponsorship from REI this workshop has been discounted from the normal rate of $360 per person to $280 early registration ($330 after March 20).

$45 transportation fee (optional). Transportation from Double Tree Hotel to Stub Stewart State Park worksite and back to the OCC each day of workshop. If you have your own transportation, you may use that and meet us at Stub Stewart State Park.

This fee includes: nationally recognized instructors, high instructor to participant ratio, lunch on each day of the workshop, trail dozers and related equipment, and limited PPE.

Workshop Description:
Bulldozers have been in existence since the early part of the 20th century, serving as workhorses for cutting and grading earth. While available then (and now) in a wide range of sizes, until somewhat recently, very small dozers were largely nonexistent. This changed in 1985, when a new dozer was designed, engineered, and built specifically for trail construction. Typically referred to as a “mini-dozer” or “trail dozer,” these small steel-tracked dozers provided builders the ability to construct more tread in less time, and have proven to be a great asset to the industry. There have now been hundreds of dozers built and sold, and most are still in use. Thousands of miles have been built with these dozers.

Recognizing the place of these units in the industry, and the wide range of user skill and experience amongst operators, PTBA has committed to improve the quality of dozer operators and, ultimately, the efficiency and final quality of trail projects. One skilled machine operator and the right machine can do the work of many hand laborers in a fraction of the time. In a dollars and cents world, dozers can save you time and money on any given trail project.

An untrained machine operator can do a lot of damage in no time and this often requires significant time to "clean up the mess." These situations have given machine built trail a bad image and left trail users and land managers wondering if there is a "better way."

This 2-day primer on Trail Dozer operation is focused on introducing aspiring trail dozer operators and beginner trail dozer operators (less than 20 hours of experience) to the basics of machine understanding, maintenance issues, and basic operation technique on gentle terrain. Learn from instructors that have done it for years and avoid the pitfalls that most of us have fallen into.

Workshop Topics
1. Ability to move and operate the machine safely -- Demonstrate an understanding of operator, bystander, and environmental safety
2. Ability to operate the controls -- Demonstrate an understanding of how the machine works, how to use it effectively and efficiently, and how to work in gentle terrain conditions.
3. Ability to keep the machine operating properly via proper maintenance -- Develop a rudimentary knowledge of the mechanical aspects of the machine, and what to look for in the field to keep it in good running order, and avoid breakdowns.
4. Ability to safely and legally transport the machine -- Including tie-downs, trailer and truck capacities, and safe on and off-road transport practices.

Instructor Biography – Tony Boone, Tony Boone Trails
Tony Boone has passionately led professional crews, government agencies, youth corps, volunteers, farmers and villagers around the world in sculpting over 650 miles of sustainable, natural surface, shared-use trails for all ages and abilities. In 1994, he became a professional trail builder, joined the Western Trailbuilders Association, and purchased his first SWECO 450 Trail Dozer. His obsession is creating kinesthetically and aesthetically diverse trails that riders love. Boone is a Certified Trail Dozer Operator (Professional Trailbuilders Association) with over 10,000 hours on trail dozers and mini excavators. He is also skilled on loaders, tracked carriers, Magnum Blaster, and ATV rock rakes/harrows.

What to Bring:
Appropriate field gear for the weather. Expect to be outside both days of the workshop. We are in the Coast Range of NW Oregon, which is a wet environment. Expect rain and be pleasantly surprised if it stays dry. This is a working and very hands on workshop, please come prepared for such. Being prepared includes having the following: good work clothing including rain gear, good boots, gloves, eye protection, hearing protection, and a hard hat. Lunch is provided each day but you will need to bring a pack for water, snacks, and extra clothing. Barring major weather events this workshop will happen rain, snow, or shine.

Meet your workshop at 8:45 am at the LL Stub Stewart State Park (30380 NW Hwy 47, Buxton, OR 97109) Visitor Center parking lot. This is a 40 minute drive from downtown Portland.
If you have registered for van transportation-
Our group will meet at 7:45 am on the day of the workshop at the Double Tree by Hilton Hotel (1000 NE Multnomah St., Portland, OR 97232) in the Oregon Room.

From I-405 --
Follow I-405 to US Hwy 26 West toward Beaverton (Exit 1D).
Continue on US 26 for 28.2 miles.
Take a right on OR 47 North (signs for Vernonia/Clatskanie) for 4.1 miles.
Follow the signs for LL Stub Stewart State Park on the right and proceed to the Visitor Center parking lot.

From I-5 South - Washington
Take exit 302A toward Moda Center/City Center
Keep left at the fork, follow signs for Rose Quarter
Continue straight onto N Vancouver Avenue
Continue onto NE Wheeler Avenue
Turn left onto NE Multnomah Street and the hotel will be on your right
From I-5 North - Salem Area
Take exit 302A for Weidler Street
Merge right onto NE Weidler Street
Turn right onto NE Martin Luther King Jr Boulevard
Turn left onto NE Multnomah Street and the hotel will be on your right
From Portland International Airport (PDX)
Get on I-205 S
Follow I-205 S and take exit 21B for I-84/US-30 W toward Portland
Merge onto I-84/US-30 W
Take exit 1 toward Llyod Center
Keep right at the fork, follow signs for Llyod Center and merge onto NE 13th Avenue
Turn left onto NE Multnomah Street
DoubleTree by Hilton Portland will be on the left

ENDING TIME AND LOCATION:
At the end of your Workshop, we will load up the vans at 4:00 pm and travel back to the Double Tree by Hilton Hotel. Plan to arrive back at the Hotel at 5:00 pm.
