Trail Bridge Construction

Date: Friday - Saturday, May 15-16
Time: 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Cost: $280 early registration ($330 after March 20) plus $45 transportation fee (optional)
Maximum of 12 participants

Workshop Costs:
Due to a generous sponsorship from REI this workshop has been discounted from the normal rate of $360 per person to $280 early registration ($330 after March 20).

$45 transportation fee (optional). Transportation from Double Tree Hotel to Stub Stewart State Park worksite and back to the OCC each day of workshop. If you have your own transportation, you may use that and meet us at Stub Stewart State Park.

This fee includes: nationally recognized instructors, high instructor to participant ratio, lunch on each day of the workshop, all bridge materials and related equipment, and limited PPE.

Description:
Learn the basics of dimensional lumber bridge construction in a two-day, hands-on workshop. This session will cover the survey, design, and construction of a bridge and its abutments as a part of the PTBA Legacy Trail at Stub Stewart State Park. Participants will construct an 40’ long, 4’ wide pedestrian bridge from dimensional lumber.

Topics covered will include site assessment, pedestrian bridge design criteria, materials options and transportation, sizing and moving stringers, post, rail, and decking options, essential and helpful tools, and leaving a clean, finished product and work site.

Participants should come ready to work with gloves, long pants, and boots. Personal protective equipment will be provided.

What to Bring:
Appropriate field gear for the weather. Expect to be outside both days of the workshop. We are in the Coast Range of NW Oregon, which is a wet environment. Expect rain and be pleasantly surprised if it stays dry. This is a working and very hands on workshop, please come prepared for such. Being prepared includes having the following: good work clothing including rain gear, good boots, gloves, eye protection, hearing protection, and a hard hat. Lunch is provided each day but you will need to bring a pack for water, snacks, and extra clothing. Barring major weather events this workshop will happen rain, snow, or shine.

MEETING TIME AND LOCATION:
If you are planning to drive yourself-
Meet your workshop at 8:45 am at the LL Stub Stewart State Park (30380 NW Hwy 47, Buxton, OR 97109) Visitor Center parking lot. This is a 40 minute drive from downtown Portland.
If you have registered for van transportation-
Our group will meet at 7:45 am on the day of the workshop at the Double Tree by Hilton Hotel (1000 NE Multnomah St., Portland, OR 97232) in the Oregon Room.

LL Stub Stewart State Park (30380 NW Hwy 47, Buxton, OR 97109)
From I-405 --
Follow I-405 to US Hwy 26 West toward Beaverton (Exit 1D).
Continue on US 26 for 28.2 miles.
Take a right on OR 47 North (signs for Vernonia/Clatskanie) for 4.1 miles.
Follow the signs for LL Stub Stewart State Park on the right and proceed to the Visitor Center parking lot.
Double Tree by Hilton Hotel (1000 NE Multnomah St., Portland, OR 97232)
From I-5 South - Washington
Take exit 302A toward Moda Center/City Center
Keep left at the fork, follow signs for Rose Quarter
Continue straight onto N Vancouver Avenue
Continue onto NE Wheeler Avenue
Turn left onto NE Multnomah Street and the hotel will be on your right
From I-5 North - Salem Area
Take exit 302A for Weidler Street
Merge right onto NE Weidler Street
Turn right onto NE Martin Luther King Jr Boulevard
Turn left onto NE Multnomah Street and the hotel will be on your right
From Portland International Airport (PDX)
Get on I-205 S
Follow I-205 S and take exit 21B for I-84/US-30 W toward Portland
Merge onto I-84/US-30 W
Take exit 1 toward Llyod Center
Keep right at the fork, follow signs for Llyod Center and merge onto NE 13th Avenue
Turn left onto NE Multnomah Street
DoubleTree by Hilton Portland will be on the left

ENDING TIME AND LOCATION:
At the end of your Workshop, we will load up the vans at 4:00 pm and travel back to the Double Tree by Hilton Hotel. Plan to arrive back at the Hotel at 5:00 pm.
