Trail Construction – Cost Realities

Instructor: Margie Tatro & Mark Reineke, Reineke Construction
Date: Wednesday-Thursday, May 20-21
Time: Begins 2:30 pm on Wednesday, ends at 5:00 pm on Thursday
Cost: $280 early registration ($330 after March 20)
Maximum of 18 participants

Workshop Costs:
Due to a generous sponsorship from REI this workshop has been discounted from the normal rate of $360 per person to $280 early registration ($330 after March 20). This fee includes: nationally recognized instructors, high instructor to participant ratio, lunch on the second day of the workshop, and cost estimating tools.

Workshop Description:
One of the most challenging elements of trail planning is budgeting. Understanding the factors associated with trail construction cost estimates will help recreation planners, land managers, trail advocates, policy makers, designers, and architects. This workshop will deliver a simple, cost estimating tool and provide a list of the key factors associated with trail construction costs. Issues such as the true costs, risks and opportunities of volunteer labor; overhead costs such as equipment maintenance; and comparisons of hand-built and machine-built construction methods will be covered. Participants will visit one or more sites, envision a new trail or inspect an existing trail, and use the internet and other resources to develop their own cost estimates. Results will be reviewed and compared at the end of the workshop.

This workshop is appropriate for recreation planners, land managers, trail advocates, policy makers, designers, and architects. Trail service providers are also welcome.

Workshop Agenda

• Use a simple spreadsheet to calculate the cost of an example trail construction project.
• Identify the risks and uncertainties in cost estimating.

Margie Tatro is a degreed mechanical engineer and lifelong outdoor enthusiast. After working as a trail volunteer for decades, she and her husband founded their trail and watershed restoration construction company, Reineke Construction, in 2006. While the first few years with Reineke Construction provided opportunities for night and weekend work with the firm, Margie became the company’s “chief enthusiast” and full time field crew member in 2013. Prior to 2013, she led energy research efforts at Sandia National Laboratories. During her time in research she led a group of over 200 people and managed a budget of over 150 million dollars. She is a member of the Society of Women Engineers and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.

Mark Reineke is a registered professional engineer in the state of New Mexico and holds contractor’s licenses in several categories. He is the chief of operations at Reineke Construction and has successfully run small businesses throughout his career. Mark has over 35years of construction and project management experience with small and large firms, operates a wide variety of construction equipment, and mentors young people on how to successfully operate a business.

What to Bring:
Participants should bring a smart phone or Ipad (to call local vendors, check pricing, etc). It would also be helpful if participants can load and run simple excel spreadsheets. Participants should be prepared to be outdoors for a few hours. A rain jacket and sturdy shoes are recommended. A box lunch is provided the second day.
