Walk the Historic Columbia River Highway State Trail

Date: Sunday, May 17
Time: 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
Cost: $55 (includes a box lunch)
Skill Level: Easy Hiking
Length: Approximately 8 miles (spread out over multiple stops)

Walk the Historic Columbia River Highway (an engineering feat in its day) and see that 62 miles of the original 73 miles of highway are open to auto traffic or cyclists and hikers. The State of Oregon and other local jurisdictions have been planning and building this world class and historic trail since 1987. Tour the trail from the new bike/pedestrian bridge over the Sandy River, east to Crown Point and past numerous waterfalls, including Multnomah Falls, Cascade Locks, and points east such as Hood River and Mosier. Walk the trail in the old highway tunnel complete with “window cutouts” offering spectacular views of the hills above the Columbia River Gorge.

Learn how the state highway and parks departments, local cities and counties, and citizen groups have worked together on this trail. See how the trail, and bike/eco-tourism along and near the trail have helped revitalize the local small town and rural economies. Learn how “bike hubs” are being planned along the trail route. The trail was designated a National Recreation Trail in 2002.
