Equestrian Design and Layout

This workshop highlights what is important for agency personnel, professional trail builders, as well as shared use trail enthusiasts and volunteer trail maintainers to know how to be productive and effective stewards of equestrian trails.

Fundamentals of Trail Design and Layout

Date & Time: May 5-6, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Cost: $325
Location: Hills and Dales MetroPark

This workshop presents basic trail design and layout for natural surface trails, including terrain dynamics, sustainable trail design elements, direction-reversing turns, location of structures, and use of information and measurement tools. We will field test these concepts and tools, then turn to look at the social and aesthetic values that bring great trails to life. Each student will lay out a trail line as part of the class.

With the September 2013 release of the Federal Trail Accessibility Guidelines, communities and land trusts need to know how to sustainably build hiking trails that provide access for everyone. This important workshop will help you understand the guidelines and will provide an overview of the techniques and hands-on skills needed to build sustainable hiking trails that provide enjoyment for all. Whether you work with an existing trail or are contemplating a new trail, this workshop is for you!

High Efficiency Trail Assessment Process (HETAP)

Date & Time: May 5-6, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Cost: $420 (lunch included both days)
Location: Hills and Dales MetroPark

The two-day workshop combines classroom and practical, hands-on trail assessment experience to ensure that participants have the skills and confidence to conduct assessments. The course will conclude with a written UTAP/HETAP Certification Exam, which is the first step towards certification as a Trail Assessment Coordinator.

Retrofitting Trails for Accessibility

Do you have a trail or trails which you might want to re-design so that they meet federal trail accessibility (ABA) requirements? This half day workshop will provide information on assessing existing trails and how they might be retrofitted to meet the Federal Trail Standards for Accessibility. We will use field measurements on a trail to illustrate how a trail could meet the requirements. Handouts will help participants understand the processes and the math required.
