Sustainable Trails For All

Date & Time: May 5-6, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Cost: $355
Location: Hills and Dales MetroPark

With the September 2013 release of the Federal Trail Accessibility Guidelines, communities, and land trusts need to know how to sustainably build hiking trails that provide access for everyone. This important workshop will help you understand the guidelines and will provide an overview of the techniques and hands-on skills needed to build sustainable hiking trails that provide enjoyment for all. Whether you work with an existing trail or are contemplating a new trail, this workshop is for you!

Better trail design and accessibility work together. The trail accessibility guidelines provide a great opportunity for all trail planners and managers to identify ways to make their trail systems more sustainable and available to more hikers while maintaining the unique natural setting of the trail and reducing maintenance costs in the long term. This session will cover where and how the Federal Trail Accessibility Guidelines apply and how non-federal lands can also benefit from using these trail guidelines.

This two-day, in-depth, field-oriented workshop will provide you with information on the Federal Trail Accessibility Guidelines, assessment for trail accessibility, and planning and constructing trails which meet these new guidelines.

Workshop Goals:
• Understand the new Federal Accessibility Guidelines and how they apply
• Learn how to assess land for trail accessibility
• Plan and construct trails that meet the new guidelines

What to Bring:
Appropriate field gear for the weather. Expect to be outside during this workshop. We will be operating in the Midwest in May. Expect rain and be pleasantly surprised if it stays dry. We will provide dust masks, first aid kits, and all of the tools and equipment necessary for the workshop. Participants should plan on bringing hard hats, safety glasses, work gloves, and sturdy work boots.

Instructor(s): Peter Jensen, Peter S. Jensen and Associates, LLC, and Janet Zeller, USFS
