2006 National Recreation Trails Photo Contest

Whistle post on the Decker's Creek National Recreation Trail. This concrete "whistle post" is one of many types of signs that railroads used to remind engineers to sound the locomotive whistle for a road crossing ahead. The Mon River / Caperton / Deckers Creek Rail-Trails cut through the Allegheny Mountains in north central West Virginia forming a 46-mile multi-use linear park (photo from Monongahela River Trails Conservancy).
