A part of the American Trails Advancing Trails Webinar Series, the webinar “Building Capacity with Volunteers – Essential Building Blocks of a Successful Program" will benefit both those who already have an existing volunteer program or are looking to get one started.

The U.S. Department of Labor indicates that between September 2013 and September 2014, 62.8 million people volunteered. For this time period, the median hours per volunteer was 50 and the median annual hours spent on volunteer activities ranged from 32 to 96 hours. Applying the most recent estimated value of $23.07 as an hourly rate, the total value of volunteers is estimated to be over 72 billion dollars!

Across the country, agencies and organizations are embracing volunteers to satisfy their goals and objectives. You will benefit from this webinar if you have an existing volunteer program and are looking at ways to enhance it. Alternatively, if you are considering development of a volunteer program and are looking for information on how to get started, there will be lots of ideas for you to consider.

Kim Frederick

Kim Frederick created Chinook Associates LLC in 1990. It is a consulting company established to provide all aspects of recreational trail systems working closely with government, community and volunteer leaders. Included among Chinook’s many successes are: Creation and delivery of trail development, design and management workshops throughout the United States, Italy, Lebanon and Mexico, and the analysis of existing trail systems and creation of management plans to implement corrective measures.

Kim is a talented and accomplished Trails Program Manager with over 35 years of experience in developing partnerships, teaching, directing staff, and managing projects. As the Trails Services Supervisor for Jefferson County Open Space (Colorado) he manages a professional staff, youth corps, and volunteers in the development and management of over 225 miles of trail. This multi-use trail system connects urban areas with foothills parks and experiences over 2 million visitors annually.

The Mission of the Colorado Outdoor Training Initiative (COTI) was to provide conservation leadership and land stewardship skills training to agencies and organizations. As a founding member and Board Chairperson for COTI, Kim provided the leadership for the successful partnership of over 40 Federal, State, and local agencies, and other groups. This partnership has resulted in well-trained crew leaders and individuals, who maintained high quality standards, were extremely productive, increased their effectiveness as employees, and provided an excellent volunteer experience.

 

Jana Johns

Jana Johns

Nearly 25 years of volunteer program management & development in county government, nonprofit, and private sectors have provided Jana Johns with broad experiences and knowledge that foster a unique perspective on volunteer program challenges, improvement possibilities, and solutions. For the past nine years, she has successfully managed the Jefferson County Open Space volunteer program, utilizing her skills in capacity building to strengthen and grow volunteer support for Jeffco Open Space to over 29,000 hours annually. Her Bachelor’s degree in English and background in technical writing are the building blocks of her strong desire for knowledge and communication. An avid supporter of sharing best practices, she has been invited to present workshops at state and national conferences due to her achievements in developing innovative solutions for addressing growth and sustainability in the Jeffco Open Space volunteer program.
